CITY OF HAVRE Weekend Maintenance/City Service Worker in HAVRE, Montana

Nature of Work: This position performs skilled and semi-skilled duties requiring adherence to safety standards. Position occasionally works outside normal hours for emergencies. May work in adverse weather, extreme temperatures, and adverse conditions. Hazards of position may include sewer gases, chemicals, traffic on job sites, excavation cave-ins, and working near moving parts of machinery. Position may work in confined or tight spaces for repairs and maintenance; may work in loud noise level.Essential Functions: Position requires ability to: communicate and follow written instructions. Must be physically able to: use hand and power tools, hear traffic and machines, drive trucks, have good depth perception, walk distances on uneven ground, visually inspect areas, lift 75 pounds or more, read and repair meters, paint, lay pipe, dig and climb ladders.AREAS OF JOB ACCOUNTABILITY AND PERFORMANCE: Assists with the implementation of construction, maintenance, and operation activities for city services. Inspects and repairs streets as well as drainage and sewer systems. Installs, repairs, and cleans water mains, fire hydrants, and drinking fountains. Services water supply, sewer lift, and other pumps. Determines the location of utility lines prior to excavation. Responds to complaints regarding water leaks, pressure loss or no water, evaluates the situation, and explains findings to supervisor. Contacts residents and businesses when services will be shut off. Drives trucks for loading, hauling, and unloading of various equipment including gravel and garbage. Sands streets during winter. Operates power equipment for water, sewer and street departments such as sewer jet, compressors, sanders, generators, vac truck, roller, oil distributor, and crack sealer. Assists in painting and striping streets. Does cement work. Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment; informs shop foreman of needed repairs. Performs manual labor duties in construction and maintenance projects.Inspects, repairs, and replaces meters as well as tests for accuracy. Takes meter readings on assigned routes, records data for utility billing, and notes unusual consumption or malfunctions. Assists in the maintenance of city buildings. Maintains communications with the office for varied assignments. Regulates traffic in hazardous conditions. Performs other related duties as required.JOB REQUIREMENTS: Knowledge: This position requires a considerable knowledge of: equipment, facilities, materials, and methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction, and repair activities. Skills: This position requires skills in the operation of above tools, trucks, and equipment. Abilities: This position requires the ability to: perform strenuous manual tasks for extended periods of time; lift 75 pounds or more; follow safety procedures; work in adverse conditions; communicate effectively orally and in writing; follow verbal and written instructions; establish effective working relationships with fellow employees, supervisors, and the public.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: The above knowledge, skills, and abilities are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to: A High School diploma or GED/HiSet. Two years experience with trucks and heavy equipment preferred. Construction experience preferred. Must possess a valid state of Montana Commercial driver's license or be able to obtain one within six months of hire.$17.54 after probationary period
